Losing your faith isn’t like losing a marble; it’s like losing your marbles. When it comes to pass the day that you wake up and realize that your Santa Clause is actually mom and dad, you’re sanity may be a little shaken. Mine is.
This is especially because of my history of church. In high school, I was bright enough to go to church and worship like all of my friends. You know what it’s like when you’re in high school! You do whatever everyone else is doing or else you find yourself all alone… and no one wants to be alone. We want to be surrounded by people. We want applause. We want to be told that we have a good head on our shoulders. I was told that.
This isn’t high school. This is the real world. Those tricks still work, yes. If you go along with whatever everyone else is doing then most likely you’ll find yourself surrounded by people. It’s called being ‘like-minded’ and it’s not mystical. If you decide to break away from the pack and think for yourself, you’re going to find that you will do anything to retain that togetherness, even as it’s slipping away.
We can put up a charade. We can submit to what we know, in our brains, to be wrong. We can justify our illusions by basing our lives on tradition because tradition is warm and comfortable. Maybe tradition is there for people who can’t face the coldness of reality.
And reality is cold. It’s not comforting; it’s not warm. People all around the world are facing cold reality. Wrapping ourselves in a nice warm illusion is a psychological defense mechanism. God is a defense mechanism.
Losing faith is what happens when shit gets real. So my advice to you, if you care to take it, is hold tightly to your faith. Take a warm bath in God. No one likes a cold shower of reality.
Now I have a new religion, though. My god is everything.
